The collective excitation of plasmon resonances in metal nanostructures can act as optical antennas and localize electromagnetic energy on the nanoscale. The enhancement of local electric fields can be so strong that Raman scattering from single molecules becomes detectable. The plasmon resonance is also expected to dramatically enhance the nonlinear optical response.

We are investigating the nonlinear optical response of plasmonic nanostructured materials, known as photonic metamaterials. Shown in Fig. 1 is a fishnet metamaterial composed of two layers of silver grids.
